Visitors invited to take on the Ardblair Stones Challenge at Perth Highland Games

One of Scotland’s most distinctive tests of strength will return to Perth Highland Games this August, with visitors once again being invited to take on the famous Ardblair Stones.

Originating in Perthshire, the Ardblair Stones have become a recognised challenge at events across the UK, attracting everyone from first-time participants to some of the world’s strongest athletes.

The challenge consists of nine concrete stones weighing from 18kg to 152kg. Participants attempt to lift and load the stones onto whisky barrels, starting with the lightest and working their way up through the set.

Unlike the heavyweight competitions, the Ardblair Stones are not reserved for elite athletes. Members of the public can step forward and test themselves against the stones throughout the day, making it one of the most accessible and popular attractions at the Games.

Created by Charlie Blair Oliphant of Ardblair Castle near Blairgowrie, the challenge made its Highland Games debut in 2012 and has since earned a reputation as one of the toughest strength tests in Scotland.

Visitors to Perth Highland Games on Sunday 9 August will have the opportunity to watch experienced competitors tackle the stones before deciding whether to try the challenge for themselves.

A spokesperson for Perth Highland Games said: “The Ardblair Stones are always a popular attraction because people can do more than just watch. Visitors can step up and see how many stones they can load, whether that’s one stone or all nine. It’s a unique challenge with strong Perthshire roots and we’re delighted to have it as part of this year’s Games.”

The Ardblair Stones will join a packed programme of events at Perth Highland Games, including heavyweight competitions, Highland dancing, athletics, cycling, pipe bands, medieval knights, trade stands and family entertainment.

Perth Highland Games takes place on Sunday 9 August 2026 on the North Inch, Perth.
