St Johnstone head coach Simo Valakari will serve as Chieftain of Perth Highland Games as the event celebrates its 200th anniversary on Sunday 9 August 2026.
Originally from Finland, Simo enjoyed a successful playing career with clubs including Motherwell, Derby County and FC Dallas, as well as representing the Finnish national team. He arrived in Perth in October 2024 and went on to guide St Johnstone back to the Scottish Premiership as 2025/26 champions.
Since coming to Perth, Simo has also worked to build stronger links between the football club and the wider community. He has visited schools, attended local events and spoken about the importance of St Johnstone giving something back to the city.
He said the support of the Perth public had played a major part in making the city feel like home.
“Both bring people together through sport and create a strong sense of community,” he said when asked what Perth Highland Games and St Johnstone contribute to the city.
“They give people of all ages the chance to enjoy a special atmosphere, create lasting memories and share a sense of pride in the city of Perth.”
The role of Chieftain is one of the most important traditions at a Highland Games. Simo will be officially welcomed during the Chieftain’s March at around 1pm, when he will be piped around the main arena on the North Inch.
His appointment is particularly fitting for an anniversary year centred on strength, skill, discipline and determination, qualities Simo believes are equally important in football.
Visitors will be able to see heavyweight events including the caber toss, Highland dancing, athletics, cycling, medieval combat and a pipe band competition featuring bands from around the world.
Perth Highland Games takes place at the North Inch on Sunday 9 August 2026. Tickets are cheaper when booked online in advance, with discounted prices available until the evening of Friday 7 August.
